Ubuntu schwag

Filed under: Journal Entries — Smaran @ 6:03 pm

I ordered some ‘original’ Ubuntu CDs about 2 weeks ago and they arrived yesterday. Much faster than expected.

I also got some nice stickers in the package. CDs of Ubuntu and its variations (Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu) are shipped for free through a service called ShipIt. From what little Dutch I understand, it seems that the package came from the Netherlands.

The company behind Ubuntu, Canonical is based in South Africa. The guy who founded Canonical, Mark Shuttleworth is the first African in space and also the founder of Thawte, one of the largest digital certification companies.

Check out some photographs of the “Schwag.”

  1. I’m not much in the know here. I gather you advise Ubuntu over Kubuntu? I should really delve into this sometime. I should do a lot sometime, so…

    The pictures are neat, though.

  2. Yes, I prefer Ubuntu over Kubuntu.

Linux and Unix, from what I understand, are command-line operating systems that require a graphical desktop environment to make them usable by the average person. There are many desktop environments, but the two most popular right now are KDE and GNOME.

Most popular Linux distributions let you choose one of the two. Distributions like openSUSE let you choose at installation. Ubuntu has a different approach. It runs GNOME by default and has separate projects dedicated to KDE and Xandros Xfce, a desktop environ for older, lower-end computers.

So, in the end it comes to down to what you prefer, KDE or GNOME. I have tried both and I like GNOME a lot more. KDE is too cluttered and complicated. The only thing is miss out on in GNOME is Konqueror, an excellent browser that Apple’s Safari is based on. I guess you have to try both to decide which side you’re on. I won’t be surprised if you like KDE more, because it’s supposed to be prettier and more Mac-like. Take it from a Mac user that it isn’t. OS X is about simplicity and ease-of-use, and GNOME is as good as it gets on the PC. There’s a reason it’s the default desktop environment on Ubuntu ;-)
    Hope I haven’t bored you.

  3. I think you are thinking of Xfce and Xubuntu rather than Xandros which is a whole other distro!

I prefer gnome to KDE too. Xfce is nice on a low end machine though.

Also you can probable run Konq on Ubuntu with the kde libs installed try an:
    apt-get install konqueror
    or run
    apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
to get the option of changing between KDE and gnome at the GDM login screen

    cheers

  4. Right, my mistake! Xandros is a distro. I meant Xfce of course.

I’ll try installing Konqueror on GNOME and let you know how it goes. Maybe I’ll even give Kubuntu a shot. Is it any better than openSUSE with KDE? That’s the only way I’ve used it.

    Thanks for the comment.

  6. Hi Alan,

Thanks for sharing that link with me. Thing is, I already knew about it. I submitted it to digg.com a week ago.

Let me know how the Ubuntu install goes. I tried out Kubuntu today, I might do a post about it soon.
